Teeth Cleaning in Indianapolis IN

What is a dental cleaning?

A dental prophylaxis (a.k.a. prophy) is the removal of plaque, calculus and stains from the teeth. A prophy aids in controlling minor irritations treats gingivitis and prevents other gum disease signs and symptoms from occurring.

What is a “deep cleaning’?

Bacteria found in plaque produce toxins or poisons that irritate the gums, which may cause them to turn red, swell, or bleed easily. If this irritation is prolonged, the gums separate from the teeth causing pockets (spaces) to form. As periodontal disease progresses the supporting gums and bone that hold the teeth in place deteriorate. If left untreated, this leads to tooth loss.

A “deep cleaning,” as scaling and root planing is often called, is the treatment of periodontal disease. Periodontal treatment removes the irritants that cause the pocketing and bone loss around your teeth and roots. While this is a non-surgical procedure, some patients prefer to be numb during this deep cleaning.

Other important factors affecting your periodontal health include:

  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Stress
  • Clenching and grinding teeth
  • Medication
  • Poor nutrition
