Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum – A Sight to See
Every racing fan knows about the Indy 500, which revolutionized American racing. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum pays tribute to the extensive history surrounding this prestigious event, as well as motor racing in general. Dr. Craig Arive, the best dentist in Indianapolis IN (mentioned below) loves to visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on his off time. And recommends this attraction to anyone who is a car enthusiast.
The museum is right in the heart of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, sitting between turns one and two of the track. It’s open every day of the year, excluding Thanksgiving and Christmas. Whether you want to immerse yourself in racing culture or get pumped for the next race, a visit to the museum is well worth your time.
Current Exhibits
From the Vault
The IMS has an extensive collection of automobiles, race cars, and artifacts that it shares with the public. The exhibits change regularly, ensuring that there’s something new every time you visit.
Of course, most people come to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum to see cars, which the exhibit delivers in abundance. Here are just some of the treasures you may see:
- 1964 Ferrari 250 LM
- 1966 Ford GT40
- Corvette SS
- Firestone Test Car
- Texaco-Havoline Lola
And the best part is that you can adopt an exhibit, which helps the museum cover its maintenance and preparation costs. If you’ve ever wanted your name associated with some of motor racing’s greatest hits, this is your chance.
Granatelli: Larger Than Life
The Granatelli exhibit showcases a more personal part of racing history in the Granatelli brothers’ rise and their contribution to the Indy 500. It’s a true rags-to-riches story that combines one family’s love of motor vehicles with the twists and turns of the Indianapolis 500, culminating in the victory of Mario Andretti in 1969.
Museum Tours
The museum’s specially guided tours will give you an insiders’ view into the world of the Indy 500. If you’ve ever wanted to see the mythical basement level of the IMS Museum or want to experience the thrill of the track with a guided lap, the museum tours are well worth the price of admission.
The basement tours currently operate on a reservation basis, though you can try your luck with a walk-in on a quiet day. Each tour has a limited capacity, so booking is a good idea to secure your spot.
Regarding the Tack and Facility tours, the IMS Museum has stopped taking reservations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You can still get a lap around the track with the Kiss the Bricks tour, which operates on a first-come, first-served basis, so get there early to avoid disappointment. A tasty beer would hit the spot after the car racing history, so check out the Blind Owl Brewery, just minutes away.
